Gum disease is common, but that doesn’t mean its not serious. You may have been told at a recent dental appointment that you have it but aren’t sure what that means. Education is key. Knowing what causes gum disease and how to prevent it are the best defenses when it comes to your oral health.

All About Gum Disease

About half of all American adults have gum disease at some point in their lives. In it’s early stages, gum disease is called gingivitis. When gingivitis progresses, it becomes gum disease or periodontal disease. Periodontal disease affects the gum tissue and the bones of the mouth. Periodontal disease can lead to irreparable damage of the teeth and gums. That’s why we take it very seriously.

Common Symptoms of Gum Disease

Common symptoms of gum disease are bleeding gums (when brushing or flossing), red or inflamed gums, gums that are receding away from the teeth, chronic bad breath, pus along the gumline, tooth pain, and loose or gapping teeth. If you notice any of these symptoms, we need you to call us to schedule an appointment. We will treat your symptoms and get you on the road to health.

How to Treat Gum Disease

There are many ways to treat gum disease. Gingivitis can be treated with a few minor adjustments to lifestyle and dental routine. Be sure to brush and floss daily. Using a gingivitis-fighting mouthwash may help reverse the course of damage. Seeing a dentist twice a year will greatly help to reduce the risk of gum disease. Professional cleanings get rid of the tartar that can cause it. For severe cases of periodontal disease, we may need to take stronger approaches to treatment. The only way we can know how to treat the problem is to see you, so please call us if you notice any symptoms.
